We are all busy, all the time, finding effective ways to manage stress and emotional ups and downs can feel like a never-ending search. If you’ve been looking for something simple, effective, and a bit different, then you’ve come to the right place. Welcome to the world of EFT Tapping – a technique that’s gaining ground for its ability to help people find emotional freedom. But what is it, and how does it work?
Let’s break it down.
What is EFT Tapping?
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques, often simply called Tapping. It’s a self-help method that’s easy to learn and focuses on relieving physical pain or emotional distress. The technique involves gently tapping on specific points of the body, called meridian points, while focusing on an issue or feeling you’d like to release. It's a powerful, non-invasive way to manage stress, anxiety, and negative emotions.

The Origins of EFT Tapping
EFT Tapping has its roots in the 1970s when several doctors began exploring how stimulating certain points on the body could help with emotional issues. The first breakthrough came with Dr. Roger Callahan’s Thought Field Therapy. However, it was Gary Craig who simplified this technique, making it more accessible for the public as EFT Tapping. Since then, EFT has evolved into a widely used practice across the world.
The Philosophy Behind Tapping
At its core, EFT Tapping is based on the concept that our body’s energy flows along pathways called meridians, similar to the principles of acupuncture. When our energy becomes blocked or imbalanced, we can experience negative emotions or even physical pain. By tapping on these meridian points, we aim to restore the body’s energy balance, allowing emotions to settle and providing relief from stress and discomfort.
How Does EFT Tapping Work?
Think of EFT Tapping like acupuncture, but without the needles! By tapping with your fingertips on key points around your body, you send calming signals to your brain. These signals help reduce the fight-or-flight response that kicks in when we’re stressed. As you focus on the issue while tapping, it’s believed that you help release the emotional charge around it.

The 5-Step EFT Tapping Process
Here’s the best part – EFT Tapping is straightforward and anyone can do it. It follows a simple 5-step process:
Identify the Issue - First, choose the specific issue or emotion you want to work on. It could be stress about work, feeling overwhelmed, or a specific fear. Focusing on one problem at a time makes the tapping more effective.
Test the Initial Intensity - Before starting, rate how strong the emotion or pain feels on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being the most intense. This helps you track your progress as you tap.
The Setup - Come up with a phrase that acknowledges the issue while accepting yourself. For example, “Even though I feel stressed about this project, I deeply and completely accept myself.” This sets the stage for your tapping sequence.
EFT Tapping Sequence - Now, tap on nine specific points on your body, starting with the side of your hand. As you tap, repeat a reminder phrase such as “this stress about the project.” Move through points like the eyebrow, side of the eye, and collarbone, tapping each one seven times while staying focused on your issue.
Test the Final Intensity- After completing the tapping sequence, rate the intensity of the issue again. Has the number dropped? If not, repeat the process until you feel the emotional or physical charge reduce.
The Science Behind Tapping
While research is still ongoing, there’s growing evidence that EFT Tapping works. Studies have shown positive results for people with anxiety, PTSD, and other emotional difficulties. For instance, a study on veterans with PTSD found that those who used EFT Tapping experienced a significant reduction in symptoms. There’s also evidence to suggest tapping can reduce stress levels by calming the brain’s stress response.
